What size should my social image be?

Each social network crops feed posts, stories and thumbnails differently on mobile and desktop, so designing at a commonly recommended pixel size reduces surprise clipping. Pick a placement to see a widely used width × height pair — for example Instagram feed 1:1 at 1080 × 1080, stories at 1080 × 1920 (9:16), or a YouTube thumbnail at 1280 × 720 (16:9). Platforms change specs without much notice; re-check official documentation before a paid campaign. Keep critical text away from edges where interface chrome overlaps. After you know the target, scale source art with the image resize calculator or explore framing via the aspect ratio tool.

Worked example

Instagram square feed → 1080 × 1080 px (1:1, ~1.17 MP). YouTube thumbnail → 1280 × 720 px (16:9, ~0.92 MP).

Limits and assumptions

Indicative community sizes only. Ad managers sometimes list different minimums from organic posts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a safe zone?

The central area unlikely to be covered by profile icons, captions or UI buttons — keep faces and text inside it, especially on stories.

Do carousels use the same size as a single post?

Often the same width and aspect as a single feed image; confirm in the app’s current create flow.

Organic versus paid ads?

Paid placements can require different minimums or aspect ratios — check the ads manager for that channel.

Should logos be vector?

Prefer vector masters, then export a raster (pixel) file at the exact size you need for upload.
