Video Upload Time Calculator
Enter file size and upload speed to see approximate transfer time.
How long will this upload take?
Upload time is file size divided by sustained upload bitrate. In practical units, seconds ≈ (megabytes × 8) ÷ megabits per second, because there are eight bits in a byte. Use a realistic upload speed — often much lower than the download figure your ISP advertises — and add headroom for protocol overhead, Wi-Fi contention and server throttling. Large masters benefit from compressing or proxying before transfer. Estimate encoded size with the video file size tool and choose a target rate with video bitrate before you clock the upload.
Worked example
850 MB at 20 Mbps → (850 × 8) / 20 = 340 seconds ≈ 5 min 40 s. At this speed, about 6.8 minutes per GB.
Limits and assumptions
Ignores TCP overhead, retries and ISP traffic shaping. Peak speed tests overstate sustained uploads to cloud platforms.
Frequently asked questions
What do MB and Mbps mean?
MB is megabytes (file size). Mbps is megabits per second (link speed). Because 1 byte = 8 bits, you multiply MB by 8 when dividing by Mbps.
Why is upload slower than download?
Consumer links are often asymmetric. Always measure upload with a speed test, not the marketing download number.
Should I use Wi-Fi or Ethernet?
Wired uploads are steadier. If you must use Wi-Fi, expect more variance than this average suggests.
Does compression change upload time?
Yes — a smaller file transfers faster. Balance quality against time using bitrate and file-size tools first.
