Event Seating Calculator
Enter room length and width plus seat width/depth or area per person to see capacity.
How many people can a room seat?
Room capacity for seated events can be estimated two ways. A seat grid divides room length and width by seat width and row depth (including knee space) and multiplies the floors. An area-per-person method divides floor area by a planning allowance (for example 1–1.5 m²) when you care more about density than chair footprints. Neither replaces fire-code limits, aisle widths or stage clearances — treat the result as a planning ceiling before the venue’s official number. For banquet table counts see wedding table planner; for spend planning see event budget.
Worked example
12 × 8 m room, 0.6 × 0.9 m seat footprint → floor(12/0.6)×floor(8/0.9) = 20×8 = 160 seats on a pure grid.
Limits and assumptions
Ignores aisles, columns and legal maximums. Area mode can overstate capacity versus a real seating chart.
Frequently asked questions
What belongs in seat depth?
Chair depth plus the gap to the next row — not just the chair alone.
Theatre versus banquet?
Banquets need more area per person; raise area-per-person or seat depth accordingly.
Standing receptions?
Use a larger area-per-person or a different planning guide — this page targets seated layouts.
Metric rooms with imperial chairs?
