Commute Cost Calculator
Add tickets or fuel, extra miles, parking and time if you want a full picture.
What does commuting really cost?
Commuting is a second job you pay for in cash and hours. Fuel or fares, parking, congestion charges and wear all add up — and the time itself has a value if you could work, rest or care for family instead. This calculator totals the money side of a regular commute so you can compare roles, hybrid patterns and season-ticket options with clearer eyes. It is especially useful beside effective hourly wage and car vs train. Estimates only — not financial advice. Season tickets, railcards and employer schemes can change the arithmetic overnight. Employer season-ticket loans and cycle-to-work schemes change the cash picture; enter the amount you actually pay after those benefits. Parking permits billed annually should be spread across the weeks you travel. Rain delays and rail replacement buses are not priced here, but they are a reason some people pay more for a reliable car option.
Worked example
Drive 18 miles each way, 4 days a week, at 45p cash cost per mile (fuel, parking share, light wear): 36 × 0.45 × 4 = £64.80 per week, about £3,370 over 52 weeks. A £2,800 annual rail season ticket looks dearer monthly until you add city parking at £12 a day to the car.
Limits and assumptions
Depreciation and insurance are only included if you bake them into your per-mile figure. Hybrid weeks need an average day count. Time cost is optional and personal — not a payroll rate. Congestion and ULEZ charges are included only if you type them in. Breakdown cover and insurance belong in a fuller motoring budget, not every short commute sketch.
Frequently asked questions
What should I include in commute cost?
Fares or fuel, parking, tolls and any congestion charge. Optionally a pence-per-mile wear allowance.
How do I handle hybrid working?
Multiply daily cost by office days per week, or annualise with your real attendance pattern.
Are season tickets better than daily tickets?
Divide the season price by the days you will travel. If hybrid cuts days sharply, flexi tickets may win.
Should I value my time?
Optionally. Multiply commute hours by a personal hourly value to see the full lifestyle cost of a role.
How does this link to job offers?
A higher salary with a longer commute can lose on effective hourly wage. Run both calculators before accepting.
