What is weekend pay?

Weekend premiums pay a multiplier on the ordinary hourly rate for Saturday and Sunday hours — time-and-a-half (×1.5) is a common pattern, but contracts vary. Gross weekend pay = hours × base rate × weekend multiplier. The tool also shows the effective hourly rate and how much of the total is premium above plain time. Confirm whether the uplift applies to all weekend hours or only after a weekly threshold, and whether bank holidays use a different factor. Output is gross before tax, National Insurance and pension. Compare with overtime pay and night shift pay when several uplifts might interact.

Worked example

12 weekend hours at £14/h with a 1.5 multiplier → £252 gross. Effective rate £21/h; premium versus plain time = £84.

Limits and assumptions

Illustrative gross pay only — not a payroll engine. Thresholds, double-time days and stacking with overtime follow your contract.

Frequently asked questions

Do bank holidays use the same multiplier?

Often not — many handbooks list a separate public-holiday factor. Check the written policy.

Can overtime stack on weekend rates?

Employer-specific. Some pay the higher of the two; others define a combined rule — do not assume automatic stacking.

Does this work for zero-hours contracts?

The arithmetic is the same if your agreement applies a weekend premium to those hours.

How do I estimate take-home pay?

This page stops at gross. Run the gross figure through a tax or take-home estimator separately.
