How much pasta per person?
Dried pasta is easiest to plan by weight before it hits the pot: light bowls often sit around 75 g per person, while a main course is commonly near 90–100 g. Multiply guests by your grams-per-person choice, then compare with pack size to see how many packets to open. Fresh pasta weighs more for a similar plate; stuffed shapes (ravioli, tortellini) follow different rules because filling replaces some pasta mass. Sauce richness and side dishes change appetite — raise the portion for hungry crowds or lower it when pasta is a side. Scale accompanying sauces with the recipe scaling tool.
Worked example
Four people at 90 g each need 360 g dry pasta — one 500 g pack with about 140 g left for another meal.
Limits and assumptions
Planning guide only, not nutrition advice. Fresh and stuffed pastas need different portion logic.
Frequently asked questions
What portion for children?
Use a lower grams-per-person figure (often half to two-thirds of an adult main) unless you know bigger appetites.
Side dish versus main?
Sides often land near 60–75 g dry; mains nearer 90–100 g depending on sauce and sides.
Is wholewheat the same weight?
Similar dry weights for a comparable plate; some people find it more filling, so you may cook slightly less.
