Cost Per Serving Calculator
Pack price and how many servings you actually get — not the marketing portion.
Which pack is cheaper to eat?
Label servings are often smaller than a real plate. Count what you will actually serve — hungry teenagers and tasting menus need different denominators. This calculator divides recipe or pack cost by servings so batch cooks, meal-preppers and small catering setups can price plates sensibly. Include oils, seasonings and expected trim if you want a café-honest figure; home cooks sometimes omit them and understate cost. Pair with recipe cost for ingredient totals and cost per 100g when comparing raw ingredients. Scale batches with recipe scaling. Packaging for stalls sits outside the food cost unless you add it. Estimates for planning — not allergen advice. Caterers quoting per head should decide whether service staff meals are included in the batch cost or treated as a separate overhead. Family meal-prep Sundays benefit from labelling containers with the per-serving figure so leftovers are valued honestly. If a recipe yields awkward half portions, round servings down rather than pretending everyone eats a fractional bowl.
Worked example
A chilli batch costs £14.40 in ingredients and yields 8 proper bowls → £1.80 per serving. If the label suggests 12 ‘servings’ you would wrongly think £1.20. Add 40p packaging for a market stall and the plate needs to clear £2.20 food-and-pack before labour and pitch fees.
Limits and assumptions
Ignores energy for cooking unless you add it. Leftovers eaten later should keep the original serving count; discarded food should reduce it. Not a nutritional analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the label’s serving size?
Only if it matches how you eat. Otherwise enter the number of real portions you get from the batch.
How do leftovers affect cost per serving?
If leftovers are eaten later, keep the original serving count. If discarded, reduce servings to what was eaten.
Can I include energy for cooking?
Optionally add a small energy estimate for a fuller plate cost; most home cooks omit it.
Where does staff time go for catering?
Usually separate from food cost. Add a labour line if you need a fully loaded plate price.
How should I treat complimentary sides?
Fold their ingredient cost into the batch total before dividing by paid covers.
