What is crop factor?

Crop factor describes how a smaller sensor tightens the field of view compared with a full-frame (35 mm) camera. Multiply the lens’s marked focal length by the crop factor to get a full-frame equivalent field of view: for example 35 mm on a 1.5× APS-C body frames like about 52.5 mm on full frame. Typical factors are roughly 1.5× (many Nikon/Sony APS-C), 1.6× (many Canon APS-C) and 2× (Micro Four Thirds). This tool converts either direction — lens to full-frame equivalent, or a desired full-frame look back to the lens you need on a crop body. Remember: equivalent FoV is not the same as equivalent depth of field or low-light behaviour. For landscape focus planning see the hyperfocal distance calculator.

Worked example

35 mm lens × 1.5 crop → 52.5 mm full-frame equivalent FoV. Want 85 mm FoV on 1.5×? Lens ≈ 85 ÷ 1.5 ≈ 56.7 mm.

Limits and assumptions

Field-of-view conversion only. Depth of field, noise and perspective still differ from a true full-frame lens at the equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Is crop factor the same as magnification?

It is a FoV equivalence factor relative to full frame, not a teleconverter.

What about full-frame lenses on crop bodies?

They work; you see a cropped portion of the image circle — enter the body’s crop factor.

Why does DoF differ?

Aperture and subject distance still behave for the real focal length; FoV equivalence does not rewrite DoF maths.

Medium format?

Use the crop or expansion factor for that sensor relative to full frame if you know it.
