Estimate eBay seller profit

Final value fees on eBay vary by category and store level. Paste the preview from a listing rather than a blog post from last year. Promoted Listings sit in the ads field so you see contribution after visibility spend. Packaging, postage you absorb and payment fees still need to appear if you want a true unit profit. Insertion and optional upgrade fees can be folded into a per-listing cost when they apply to the sale you are modelling. Compare other channels with Etsy profit, Amazon profit and marketplace fee. Sense-check generic unit maths with product profit. Planning estimates only — not tax advice. Cross-border sales need currency conversion and any international fee tier in the model before you chase overseas bids. Best Offer negotiations should be re-run at the accepted price, not the original Buy It Now figure. If unmanaged returns are climbing, raise the average return cost rather than pretending every sale sticks.

Worked example

Item sells at £40, cost £14, final value fee roughly 12.5% (£5), Promoted Listings 2% (£0.80), postage absorbed £3.20, packaging £1. Profit ≈ 40 − 14 − 5 − 0.80 − 3.20 − 1 = £15.00 before any returns. If you charged the buyer £3.20 postage and it matched cost, remove postage from both sides and profit rises by that wash — model both consistently.

Limits and assumptions

Store subscriptions are periodic fixed costs — allocate per sale only if you choose to. International fees, customs and currency conversion need extra lines. Not a Seller Hub replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my eBay fee rate?

Check the fee preview while listing, or your seller hub’s fee schedule for your store level and category.

Should postage charged to buyers count as revenue?

If buyers pay postage, it often offsets postage cost. Model both sides so you do not double-count profit.

How do insertions fees work here?

Fold insertion or optional upgrade fees into fixed per-listing cost if they apply to the sale you are modelling.

Where do returns go?

Reduce expected profit by your return rate or add average return postage and restocking cost.

Can I include PayPal or managed payments fees?

Yes — put processing fees in the fee field so net proceeds match your payout.
