What does fulfilment cost per order?

Ecommerce fulfilment cost per order stacks pick-and-pack labour, packaging materials, carrier postage and a fair share of storage or warehouse overhead. Sum those lines for a landed fulfilment figure, then optionally divide by selling price to see fulfilment as a percentage of revenue. Rising postage or oversized packaging often dominates; storage share matters more when slow movers sit on shelves between sales. Use the total when stress-testing price and ads alongside channel fee tools. Compare marketplace economics with Shopify profit and shipping rules with shipping cost per order.

Worked example

£1.80 pick + £0.90 pack + £3.50 post + £0.40 storage = £6.60. On a £28 price that is about 23.6% of revenue.

Limits and assumptions

User-entered costs only. Multi-item orders and remote regions need weighted averages outside this page.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as fulfilment?

Everything required to get a paid order into the customer’s hands after the click — typically pick/pack labour, packaging, postage and a slice of storage.

How should I allocate storage?

Divide monthly warehouse cost by orders (or by cubic metres occupied × orders) for a blunt per-order share.

Does free shipping change this?

Yes — postage you absorb still belongs in fulfilment even if the customer paid £0.

Include payment fees?

Usually keep card fees in a profit tool; this page focuses on physical fulfilment.
