How many plants fit in a garden bed?

Garden bed planning starts with footprint: length × width for bed area, then an optional path strip carved from the inside so planting area shrinks realistically. Divide planting area by spacing squared for a simple square-grid plant count — the same idea as seed-packet centimetres on a rectangular layout. Intensive or staggered patterns can fit more; this estimate stays conservative. Paths between separate beds are usually measured outside this box. Fine-tune gaps with plant spacing and soil volume with raised bed soil.

Worked example

3 × 1.2 m bed = 3.6 m². No path, 0.30 m spacing → floor(3.6 / 0.09) = 40 plants.

Limits and assumptions

Square grid only. Ignores edge setbacks beyond the path field and perennial mature spread.

Frequently asked questions

What does path width do?

It shrinks usable planting length and width so a walkway inside the bed is not counted as plantable area.

Where does spacing come from?

Seed packets and nursery tags — use the recommended in-row or grid spacing in your unit system.

Can I mix crops?

Run the tool once per spacing group, or use the widest spacing for a blended bed.

Raised vs in-ground?

Area maths is the same; soil depth is a separate purchase via a soil volume tool.
