Tip and split a bill
At the table you usually tip a percentage of the bill, then divide the grand total evenly. Enter the bill, tip percent and headcount: tip amount = bill × tip%, grand total = bill + tip, and each person pays grand ÷ people. The breakdown also shows the bill-only share without tip so you can see how much of the tip each person covers. Even splits only — if one person ordered wine for the table, settle extras separately or use weighted shares in the bill split tool. For recurring house bills see shared expense.
Worked example
£68.40 bill with 12.5% tip → tip ≈ £8.55, grand total ≈ £76.95. Split four ways ≈ £19.24 each (bill-only share ≈ £17.10).
Limits and assumptions
Even split only. Service charges already on the bill should not be tipped twice — set tip to 0% if service is included.
Frequently asked questions
Should tip be before or after tax?
Follow local custom. Enter the figure you tip on — usually the bill total as presented.
What if someone is not drinking?
Either tip on food only outside this tool, or move to weighted bill split shares.
Can I tip a round number instead?
Yes — adjust the tip percent until the tip amount matches what you want to leave.
Does headcount include children?
Include anyone who should pay a share. Set people to the number splitting the card, not the whole table, if only some pay.
