How do we split trip costs fairly?
Group trips stay friendly when shared pots are clear: add lodging, travel or fuel, shared food and other joint costs, subtract anything already paid into the group pot, then divide evenly by the number of people. Per person = (lodging + travel + food + other − prepaid) ÷ people. Unequal flights, single rooms or personal sightseeing are cleaner settled outside this even split — or adjust the people count if you agree weighted shares (for example counting a child as 0.5). This is not a running IOU ledger across months. For everyday shared tabs see the shared expense calculator.
Worked example
Lodging £640 + travel £180 + food £220 + other £40 = £1,080. Split four ways with nothing prepaid → £270 each.
Limits and assumptions
Even split only. Does not track who paid which card over time or convert currencies mid-trip.
Frequently asked questions
Someone already paid the Airbnb?
Put that amount in “already in pot” or reduce the lodging field so it is not charged twice.
Can children count as half?
If the group agrees, enter a fractional people count (for example 3.5) to weight the split.
Multiple currencies on one trip?
Convert everything to one currency before entering the buckets.
Should couples count as one share?
Count shares the way you agreed to settle — either two people or one share — and stay consistent.
