How far will a holiday budget stretch?
Holiday budgets make more sense as a per-person, per-day allowance: divide total budget by people and by days. Optional line items for flights, accommodation, food and activities sum against the budget so you can see leftover cash for souvenirs and contingencies. If line items already consume most of the pot, daily freestyle spend must shrink before you arrive. Exchange rates and city price levels still vary — treat leftovers as a guide and keep a small buffer for transfers and tips. For gathering-style spends at home see the event budget calculator.
Worked example
£2,400 ÷ 2 people ÷ 7 days ≈ £171 per person per day. Flights £600 + stay £700 + food £350 + activities £200 = £1,850 → £550 leftover.
Limits and assumptions
Does not convert currencies. Tips, visas and travel insurance are omitted unless folded into a line item.
Frequently asked questions
Should prepaid flights sit in the total budget?
Yes if that money came from the same holiday pot; otherwise budget only the remaining spend.
Day trips vs nights?
Use the number of days you will actually spend money — often nights + 1.
Unequal spenders?
This page averages per person; settle personal extras separately.
What if leftover is negative?
Line items exceed budget — cut activities or raise the pot.
